How Many Days Per Week Should My Child Train at North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids?
When you first enroll your child in gymnastics, one of the most common questions we hear is simple but important: "How many days per week should my child train?"
The answer isn't one-size-fits-all, because the right schedule depends on your child's age, goals, and whether they're in recreational or competitive gymnastics. But what's universal is this: we want every child to grow stronger, more confident, and more coordinated, without burning out or losing the joy in movement.
At North County Gymnastics & The Gyminny Kids, our classes are designed to support that balanced growth, and that starts with choosing the training frequency that makes sense for your family.
Training Frequency by Age & Goals
Ages 9 Months –5 YO: Build Fundamentals & Have Fun
For our youngest gymnasts, from parent-tot classes through preschool levels, 1–2 days per week is typically ideal.
At this stage:
Classes focus on motor skills, body awareness, listening, and coordination.
One or two sessions per week keep gym exciting and fun while reinforcing new skills.
Too much training too soon can make gymnastics feel like a chore instead of an adventure, so we suggest starting with one day a week for the first month. If your child enjoys it, we suggest looking into an additional day in week five and beyond.
Ages 6–10: Skill Growth with Consistency
School-aged children who enjoy recreational gymnastics and want to develop their technique will often benefit from 2–3 days per week.
Why?
Regular repetition speeds skill progression while still allowing time for school, play, and rest.
This frequency lets kids build confidence and strength without overloading their schedule.
Adding just one practice per week to your child's schedule adds 52 classes a year and puts your child into a rapid improvement phase.
Most Gyminny Kids classes, whether Red Room (preschool) recreational levels or introductory Blue Room (school age) programs, can fit this rhythm beautifully while fitting into busy family calendars.
Recreational Classes: Ages 11+ & Competitive Track (ages 5+): More Commitment, Smart Scheduling
If your child moves toward more advanced recreational gymnastics or joins a competitive team, training often increases.
Competitive gymnasts may train 2–5 days or more per week, depending on:
Their goals
Skill level
Competition schedule
That said, even at higher levels, rest days are essential for recovery and injury prevention.
Why Rest and Balance Matter
Whether your child trains once a week or five times a week, downtime is crucial.
Across training communities, many experienced parents and coaches emphasize that:
Consistent rest reduces the risk of injury and increases longevity
Recovery days improve focus and enthusiasm
At Gyminny Kids, we build schedules that support long-term love for the sport!
