How Parent & Tot Gymnastics Helps Babies Reach Developmental Milestones
Gymnastics for Babies: Supporting Crawling, Walking & Beyond
By Daniel Gundert, Owner & CEO, Gyminny Kids
Every Great Journey Starts with One Small Step
Watching your baby reach their first milestones is one of the greatest joys of being a parent.
The first smile.
The first roll.
The first crawl.
The first steps.
These moments happen in what seems like the blink of an eye, and each one represents incredible growth happening inside your child's developing brain and body.
As both the father of six children and the owner of Gyminny Kids for more than two decades, I've had the privilege of watching not only my own children but thousands of others grow from babies into confident, capable young athletes and students.
One thing has become very clear:
Children learn best through movement.
Long before they perform cartwheels, handstands, or back handsprings, they are developing the foundational movement patterns that will support them for the rest of their lives.
That's exactly why we created our Parent & Tot programs.
At Gyminny Kids, we believe gymnastics is about much more than gymnastics. It's about helping children develop confidence, coordination, body awareness, and independence through purposeful movement in a safe, fun, and encouraging environment.
Our Parent & Tot programs are designed specifically for children ages 9 months to 3 years, creating meaningful opportunities for parents and children to learn together while supporting healthy physical, cognitive, and social development.
If you're searching for the best Parent & Tot gymnastics classes in San Diego, we'd love to show you why so many families choose Gyminny Kids.
How Does Parent & Tot Gymnastics Help Babies Reach Developmental Milestones?
This is one of the most common questions we hear from parents.
The answer is simple.
Children naturally develop through physical activity.
Every time babies crawl over a soft obstacle, pull themselves upright, balance on a low beam with a parent's assistance, climb over padded equipment, roll across a mat, or safely explore a new environment, they're practicing foundational motor skills that support their overall development.
Rather than trying to accelerate milestones, Parent & Tot gymnastics provides age-appropriate movement experiences that encourage children to practice the skills they are naturally developing.
These experiences help build:
Balance
Coordination
Body awareness (proprioception)
Vestibular awareness (the body's balance system)
Core strength
Grip strength
Bilateral coordination
Curiosity through exploration
Every child develops at their own pace, but giving them regular opportunities to move, explore, and interact in a safe environment helps lay a strong foundation for future learning.
Why Movement Matters During the First Three Years
The first three years of life are among the most important periods of development.
During this time, children are constantly making connections between their brains and bodies.
Physical activity is one of the primary ways those connections are strengthened.
As babies roll, crawl, stand, cruise, walk, climb, and eventually jump, they are learning how to coordinate both sides of their body, understand where they are in space, and build confidence through exploration.
This is one reason pediatric experts encourage active play every day.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, opportunities for active movement support healthy physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development throughout infancy and early childhood.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also emphasizes the importance of age-appropriate physical activity as children progress through developmental milestones.
At Gyminny Kids, our Parent & Tot classes are intentionally designed to encourage these natural movement experiences in a safe, clean, and professionally supervised environment.
More Than Physical Development
Many parents initially enroll their child to help them become coordinated.
What they quickly discover is that our Parent & Tot classes develop so much more.
Children are also learning to:
Listen to coaches
Explore new environments
Solve physical challenges
Build confidence
Practice patience
Take turns
Interact with other children
Become comfortable around caring adults outside of their immediate family
These early experiences often make the transition into preschool and other structured environments much smoother.
While every child develops differently, exposure to positive group experiences during these early years can help children become more comfortable with new routines and social interactions.
Joeys Parent Tot
Ages 9–18 Months
30-Minute Parent Participation Class
For many families, Joeys is where the Gyminny Kids journey begins.
Designed for babies beginning at 9 months old, Joeys introduces foundational movement experiences through guided parent participation.
Parents remain with their child throughout class while one of our experienced coaches leads fun, engaging activities designed specifically for this stage of development.
Every lesson encourages exploration while creating positive associations with movement.
Rather than focusing on gymnastics skills, Joeys focuses on the building blocks that come before gymnastics.
Children explore movements that support the development of coordination, balance, and body awareness while spending quality time with the person they trust most, you.
Joey's activities include:
Crawling
Rolling
Pulling
Pushing
Assisted balancing
Climbing over soft equipment
Sensory exploration
Directional awareness
Songs and interactive activities
Parent-child bonding
Everything is carefully designed to match the developmental abilities of babies between 9 and 18 months.
Our coaches also provide encouragement and guidance so parents feel confident participating alongside their child.
An Incredible Value for Growing Families
One of the things that makes Joeys especially unique is that we intentionally keep it affordable so more families can experience the benefits of early childhood movement.
Current pricing (as of July 2026):
$50 per month for one class each week
$100 per month for two classes each week
This makes Joey's one of the most affordable introductory Parent & Tot gymnastics programs in San Diego.
Although tuition is periodically reviewed, our pricing generally changes only once each summer. Since our annual adjustment for 2026 has already taken place, families enrolling now can reasonably expect this pricing to remain in effect until the next annual review.
Even better, getting started is easy.
Families enjoy:
No registration fees
No annual membership fees
We believe parents should be able to experience the Gyminny Kids difference before making any commitment.
That's why we invite every new family to see what makes our Parent & Tot program so special.
Little Hoppers Parent & Tot
Ages 19 Months–3 Years
45-Minute Parent Participation Class
As children become more confident walkers, climbers, and explorers, they graduate into our Little Hoppers program.
Little Hoppers is designed for children aged 19 months to 3 years and builds on the foundation established in Joeys while introducing additional structure, independence, and social interaction.
Parents continue to participate alongside their child, but you'll often notice that something exciting begins to happen.
Your toddler starts looking to the coach for guidance.
They become more willing to explore independently.
They gain confidence trying new activities.
They begin interacting with classmates.
These are important milestones that often happen naturally when children feel safe, supported, and encouraged.
During each class, our coaches guide children through age-appropriate obstacle courses, gymnastics stations, locomotor activities, songs, games, and activities that challenge both their bodies and their minds.
Children develop:
Balance
Hand-eye coordination
Jumping skills
Climbing confidence
Body awareness
Listening skills
Attention span
Social interaction
Early gymnastics concepts
Confidence through success
Every activity is intentionally designed to make learning feel like play.
That is one of the reasons children love coming back each week. Not to mention, Gyminny Kids has a PhD in themeing. The bi-weekly theme keeps the lesson plan fresh and fun and implements real-life learning into the gymnastics lessons. Including themes like letters and numbers, recycling, dental hygiene, and more!

Preparing Children for Preschool, and for Life
One of the greatest benefits of Parent & Tot classes isn't something you'll find on a skills checklist.
It's confidence.
Many toddlers spend most of their early life around parents, siblings, grandparents, and a relatively small circle of familiar adults.
Our Parent & Tot program gently expands that world.
Children begin learning how to:
Listen to someone other than Mom or Dad.
Follow simple group directions.
Wait patiently for their turn.
Watch and imitate others.
Transition between activities.
Become comfortable in a structured environment.
Celebrate their own accomplishments.
Encourage other children.
Socialize.
These experiences often make the transition into preschool smoother because children have already practiced many of the routines they'll encounter in a classroom.
Just as importantly, parents are there every step of the way, encouraging while gradually allowing their child to become more independent.
Our Family Experienced It Firsthand
One of the things I love most about Gyminny Kids is that I haven't just watched thousands of children grow through these programs; I've watched my own.
Three of my children, Remi, Rocket, and Finley, all began their journeys in our Parent & Tot classes.
Like many families, we celebrated the little victories.
The first time, they confidently climbed over an obstacle.
The first time, they balanced with just a little less help.
The first time, they eagerly ran toward their coach instead of looking back at Mom or Dad.
Those moments may seem small, but they're huge milestones in a child's development.
As they became more confident, they transitioned into Pre-Crickets at three years old, where they began participating more independently while continuing to build on the skills they had developed in Joeys and Little Hoppers.
Eventually, they entered preschool and other structured programs, already familiar with listening to teachers, following directions, participating in group activities, and interacting with children their own age.
Of course, every child develops differently, and there is no single path that's right for every family.
But looking back, I'm grateful we gave them those opportunities to learn through physical fitness, build confidence at their own pace, and become comfortable around a variety of caring coaches and positive role models.
Those experiences extended well beyond gymnastics.
Why We Believe Parent Participation Matters
One of the defining features of Joeys and Little Hoppers is that parents are active participants, not spectators.
That matters.
Children learn best when they feel safe.
During these early years, parents are their greatest source of confidence.
By participating together, you're creating positive experiences that strengthen your relationship while helping your child develop new skills.
Over time, something wonderful begins to happen.
Instead of constantly looking back for reassurance, children begin trusting themselves.
That growing independence is one of the greatest gifts these classes can provide.
Why Families Across San Diego Choose Gyminny Kids
Since 1987, Gyminny Kids has helped generations of San Diego families discover the benefits of movement-based learning.
Our Parent & Tot programs are built around the understanding that every child deserves to learn in an environment that is:
Safe
Encouraging
Age-appropriate
Clean
Professional
Positive
Fun
Our experienced coaches understand that success looks different for every child.
Some children jump right into new challenges.
Others take a little more time.
Both are perfectly okay.
Our goal isn't to rush development.
Our goal is to create an environment where children feel confident exploring, learning, and growing at their own pace.
More Than a Gymnastics Class
Parents often tell us they enrolled because they wanted their child to become more coordinated.
Months later, they tell us something entirely different.
They've watched their child become:
More confident
More independent
More willing to try new things
Better at following directions
More comfortable around other children
Excited to learn
Those are life skills.
Gymnastics is the vehicle we use to help develop them.
At Gyminny Kids, our mission has always been:
Fun and fitness while teaching character through sport.
That mission starts long before a child learns their first handstand or cartwheel.
It starts with crawling, climbing, balancing, laughing, exploring, and discovering what they're capable of alongside the people who love them most.
That's why we believe Joeys and Little Hoppers are more than Parent & Tot classes.
They're the beginning of a lifelong journey of confidence, physical fitness, and learning.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age can my baby start gymnastics?

Activities are age-appropriate and designed to support exploration rather than push children beyond their natural developmental stage.
How does Parent & Tot gymnastics help babies reach developmental milestones?
Parent & Tot gymnastics provides structured, age-appropriate opportunities for babies and toddlers to practice movements they naturally develop over time, including rolling, crawling, pulling up, balancing, cruising, walking, climbing, and eventually jumping.
These experiences can support the development of:
Gross motor skills
Balance
Coordination
Core strength
Body awareness (proprioception)
Vestibular development (balance and spatial awareness)
Confidence through movement
Every child reaches milestones on their own timeline, but regular opportunities for active play can help strengthen the foundational movement patterns children use throughout early childhood.
Is gymnastics good for babies?
Yes. When taught by trained coaches in a safe, age-appropriate environment with parent participation, gymnastics offers babies opportunities to move, explore, and build confidence through guided play.
Our Joeys class is specifically designed for infants beginning at 9 months old.
Is toddler gymnastics worth it?
Many parents find that toddler gymnastics provides benefits that extend well beyond physical activity.
Children often develop:
Better balance
Improved coordination
Listening skills
Confidence
Social interaction
Body awareness
Comfort participating in group activities
Just as importantly, it's a fun way for families to spend quality time together.
What's the difference between Joeys and Little Hoppers?
Joeys (9–18 months) focuses on early movement experiences, parent-child bonding, sensory exploration, and foundational motor skills.
Little Hoppers (19 months–3 years) builds upon those skills while introducing additional structure, obstacle courses, early gymnastics concepts, social interaction, and increasing independence.
Do parents participate in class?
Yes.
Both Joeys and Little Hoppers are parent-participation classes.
Parents remain actively involved throughout class while coaches guide activities and encourage children to explore at their own pace.
Does my child need to know how to walk?
No.
Many Joeys participants are still crawling, pulling up, or just beginning to cruise. Coaches modify activities based on each child's developmental stage.
What should my child wear?
Comfortable clothing that allows unrestricted movement is best.
Children typically participate barefoot to safely grip the gymnastics equipment and develop foot strength and balance.
How long are the classes?
Joeys
30 minutes
Little Hoppers
45 minutes
These class lengths are intentionally designed to align with the attention spans and developmental needs of each age group.
What are your Parent & Tot class ratios?
Both Joeys and Little Hoppers maintain a maximum 10:1 child-to-coach ratio, helping ensure every family receives individualized attention while still enjoying the energy of a group class. The coach teaches the parent how to teach their child. That way, your child receives instruction from both you and the coach.
Do you offer a free trial?
Yes.
We offer FREE trial classes so families can experience Gyminny Kids before enrolling.
