On June 9, 2026, the San Diego Union-Tribune and Del Mar Times published a feature story by Karen Billing highlighting an important milestone for the gymnastics community in North County San Diego.

The article, titled "Longtime Solana Beach Gym Becomes Gyminny Kids TRC After Merger, Owner Retirement," shared the story of how TRC Gymnastics founder Darryl Davis is passing the torch after more than four decades of coaching gymnastics and serving local families.

The feature appeared both online and in print on June 9, 2026, introducing thousands of readers to the next chapter of a gym that has helped shape generations of young athletes throughout Solana Beach and surrounding communities.

For everyone involved with Gyminny Kids TRC, the article was a meaningful reminder that gymnastics is ultimately about people, relationships, and the positive impact coaches can have on children and families over a lifetime.

A Legacy More Than 40 Years in the Making

Long before the current facility opened its doors, Darryl Davis was bringing gymnastics directly to children throughout San Diego County through a mobile gymnastics program called The Rolling Company.

Eventually, that vision grew into TRC Gymnastics, a Solana Beach institution known for quality coaching, strong relationships, and a deep commitment to helping children grow through sport.

For more than three decades, thousands of local children walked through the doors of TRC Gymnastics. Many former athletes eventually returned as parents and enrolled their own children in the same programs that helped shape their lives.

After more than 40 years in gymnastics, Darryl made the difficult decision to retire and spend more time with his family and grandchildren.

As he told the Union-Tribune:

"I just like working with the kids and supporting my sport."

That simple statement captures exactly why so many families respect and appreciate Coach Darryl. His career has never been about recognition. His focus has always been on helping children gain confidence, learn life skills, and discover what they are capable of accomplishing through hard work and perseverance.

A Shared Commitment to Children and Community

When the time came to identify the next chapter for TRC, preserving the gym's culture and values was essential.

The goal was never to erase the history of TRC.

The goal was to honor it.

Gyminny Kids Owner and CEO Daniel Gundert has spent more than two decades coaching, judging, and leading gymnastics programs throughout San Diego County.

After starting as a coach at Gyminny Kids in 2003, Daniel became the owner in 2021 and has since helped expand the organization to six locations, serving thousands of children every week.

Like Darryl, Daniel's life has been heavily influenced by gymnastics. He and his wife, Melanie, both grew up in the sport, and five of six of their children have participated in gymnastics as thier youngest is only a month old as of this article.

The shared philosophy between the two organizations made the transition a natural fit.

Both organizations believe that gymnastics is about much more than skills and medals. Gymnastics teaches resilience, confidence, discipline, goal setting, perseverance, leadership, and character.

Those lessons extend far beyond the gym and often stay with children long after their gymnastics careers have ended.

Keeping the TRC Name Alive

One of the first commitments made during the transition was to preserve the TRC name.

The gym now proudly operates as Gyminny Kids TRC.

For longtime TRC families, the name represents decades of memories, friendships, accomplishments, and community.

Keeping the TRC identity visible was important to both Darryl and Daniel.

As Darryl shared with the Union-Tribune:

"I'm happy to keep the TRC name. The fact that it can still be Gyminny Kids and still say TRC on it gives everybody the thought that we're still around."

That commitment can also be seen inside the facility.

A new Hall of Fame display honors the history of TRC Gymnastics, the athletes, coaches, and families who helped build the program, and Coach Darryl's remarkable journey. The display even includes his very first paycheck.

The goal is not only to preserve the history of TRC but to ensure future generations understand the impact the program has had on the local gymnastics community.

"I think it will be a really good thing, I really do."

— Darryl Davis, Founder of TRC Gymnastics

What Families Can Expect at Gyminny Kids TRC

  • Preschool gymnastics

  • Recreational gymnastics classes

  • North County Gymnastics competitive team

  • Open gym sessions

  • Kids Night Out

  • Birthday parties

  • Summer camps

  • Special events and clinics

The mission remains:

Fun and fitness while teaching character through sport.

Every class, camp, clinic, and event is designed to help children become stronger physically, mentally, and emotionally while having fun in a safe and positive environment.

New Resources Supporting Local Families

Joining the Gyminny Kids family also provides access to resources developed over nearly four decades of serving San Diego families.

Gyminny Kids Academy

Since officially assuming operations on June 1, 2026, Gyminny Kids has implemented its proprietary Gyminny Kids Academy training system at the Solana Beach location.

The platform includes hundreds of training videos, SOPs, educational resources, and coaching standards to deliver a consistent experience across all locations.

The objective is to continually improve the quality of instruction while creating a safer and more enjoyable experience for every child.

Adaptive Gymnastics Program

One of the programs highlighted in the Union-Tribune article is the adaptive gymnastics program for children with special needs.

The program provides opportunities for children to stay active, build confidence, improve coordination, and develop meaningful social connections.

At just $10 per class, it remains one of the most affordable and impactful programs offered by the organization.

As Daniel shared with the Union-Tribune:

"It's one of the most rewarding programs that we have."

Over the years, the adaptive gymnastics program has helped hundreds of families discover the physical, social, and emotional benefits of fitness in a supportive environment.

The World Famous Bungee Bouncers

Many children know Gyminny Kids for its world-famous Bungee Bouncers, developed by longtime coach Gary Johnson.

Coach Gary has been part of the Gyminny Kids family for more than 30 years and has helped create experiences that have delighted thousands of children throughout San Diego County.

The Bungee Bouncers remain one of the most popular attractions for children visiting Gyminny Kids locations. They are another example of the creativity and innovation that have become part of the company's culture.

A Commitment to Giving Back

Giving back has always been part of the Gyminny Kids culture.

Over the years, Gyminny Kids has contributed more than $850,000 to local schools, hospitals, and community organizations.

One example is the annual Coaches Cup fundraiser, where coaches compete against one another while raising money for Rady Children's Hospital.

That event alone generated more than $150,000 for local children and families.

Beyond gymnastics, Daniel also donates half of every real estate commission he earns to child-focused organizations, including Rady Children's Hospital and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

The belief is:

When children thrive, communities thrive.

Looking Toward the Future

Transitions like this do not happen often.

A beloved local institution built over decades is being entrusted to a new generation of leadership.

For Gyminny Kids, that responsibility is something we take seriously.

Our commitment is to honor the foundation Coach Darryl Davis built, continue serving local families with excellence, and create even more opportunities for children to discover the lifelong benefits of gymnastics.

We are also grateful that Coach Darryl plans to remain involved during the transition, serving as a mentor to younger coaches and continuing to share the knowledge he has accumulated throughout a remarkable career.

Perhaps the most meaningful endorsement came directly from Coach Darryl himself:

"I think it will be a really good thing, I really do."

We are grateful for the trust he has placed in our team and excited for the future of gymnastics in Solana Beach.

The story of TRC Gymnastics is far from over.

In many ways, a new chapter is just beginning.
